Please don't mention grilled cheese sandwiches to me at the moment!  Yesterday was Mother's Day, and my husband Vernu took me to the Club for lunch.  But there was no parking and a lot of crowds, so I just said, let's go to one of the cafes for lunch.  We see one (Donut King in the suburb of Jamieson) that had nice seating and bright ads on the walls for their new range of toasted sandwiches.

By this time it was nearly 2 pm and I was starving, having had only a piece of toast for breakfast and a cup of tea at 8 am.  So we ordered, a  grilled cheese toastie for me and a vegetarian pizza sub for my husband, which he bought over the counter.

Then we waited ... and waited ... and waited a bit more.  By 2:25 there was still no sign of my toastie and I was getting impatient.  So I went back to the counter.  The only person there was a young boy of maybe 10 years washing up.  I asked him where my toastie was.  He didn't know.  His mum, who'd taken my order had disappeared somewhere, and his teenage sister was happily eating HER lunch at one of the tables.  It was then I noticed that their jaffle maker was smoking.  There was my toastie, which had been forgotten and was burning.

Well, I got it and went with it to eat, a bit miffed to have to pull the burnt bits off it.  As I was doing so, I noticed something odd inside the grilled cheese and burnt bread.  When I poked at it a bit further, I found one of those square plastic fasteners that are used to seal bread.  Inside my toastie.  If I'd bitten into it I could have either broken a tooth or swallowed it and who knows what.

Vernu called the ten year old over and said he had to get the manager.  The kid wandered off, protesting that HE hadn't made the sandwich, and eventually his mother came to see what the fuss was all about.

Long story short, we DID get a refund.  I DIDN'T get my Mother's Day treat.  We went to my mum's place and had a cup of tea with her instead.

That will teach me not to think that a Donut shop can ever truly go upmarket enough to successfully make toasted cheese sandwiches.  Silly me for thinking it could.  But the bright, succulent appeal of the images in the ads swayed me.

Ok, hope this isn't a duplicate comment about Cordwainer Smith; anyway, his stories about underpeople (people/animal mixes) echo your own concerns.

Hey, saw the summary for The Miyatsu Project--Cordwainer Smith wrote a number of stories about the underpeople, mixes of people and animals. My favorites of his are "The Game of Rat and Dragon", "The Ballad of Lost C'Mell", and "Alpha Ralpha Boulevard". But I'm definitely going to check yours out.

Saw the summary for The Miyatsu Project--do you read Cordwainer Smith? I especially recommend "The Game of Rat and Dragon", "The Ballad of Lost C'Mell" and "Alpha Ralpha Boulevard". He wrote a number of stores about the underpeople, which were people/animal mixes.

Thanks! My hand is healing up nicely and I had a great birthday, with ten long-stemmed red roses from my husband, a pair of silver and moonstone earrings, and a gift certificate to the local theatre. So yeah, I had a nice time!
